Devin stood on the ledge, looking out over the city. He looked down at the street, four stories below, and smirked. Taking two running steps forward, he leaped out into the night and arced downward in a diving motion.

Devin landed safely in the back of a truck full of dirt, and dropped out the side at the first red light. He pressed his finger to his earpiece, listening closely as his informant relayed directions. “Alrigh’ Devvy. This’un’s gonna be a toughy. The guy ya lookin’ for, tha’ Doctor Karson or wa’ever, jus’ entered a rather formidable lookin’ compound over on Freidburg Street… hol’ on… It looks like they’re usin’ gas masks… get’chur hands on a uniform, an’ I bet you can walk right through tha’ fron’ door.” The man carried on after that still, his horrible accent grating on Devin’s ears. Devin quickly scaled a fire escape across the street from the compound, an Abstergo R&D Facility, and watched the guards’ movement carefully. “Mitchell,” he muttered into his mic. “There’s a guard leaving through the front gates. You got a tap on their comms?” he asked, leaping over a small gap to the next building, keeping pace with the guard.
It was only a few moments before Mitchell responded. “Yeah, Dev’. Go’ it. Offica’ Jennings is goin’ for some grub. He should cut through tha’ next alley to ya left. Good luck, brotha.” Mitchell went silent as Devin watched the guard enter the alleyway. He slid down a drainpipe behind the guard, and crept up behind him. Michael leapt forward, gripped the man’s head, and twisted sharply, grinning at the satisfyingly loud snap of the man’s spine. He quickly stripped the guard and donned the Abstergo Uniform.
“Alright, Mitchell. Any passwords or procedures I need to know about?” Devin asked as he reached the front gate. “Not that I can tell Dev’. Doctor Karson is on the secon’ floor in a research lab. Two guards outside the room, an’ that’s abou’ it, Dev’.” As Mitchell had said, there was no requirement at the gate, and Devin was let in without a fuss. He proceeded to enter the main building, and take the stairs two at a time to the second floor. “Alright, Mitchell. Radio Silence- I’m near the target.” He muttered, approaching the two guards.
“Message for Doctor Karson.” He said to the two guards, who nodded and waved him through. Devin almost laughed at how easy this assignment was turning out. He entered the darkened lab and saw a video conference in progress. Dr. Karson was speaking rather appeasingly to another Doctor, evidently his superior. “I assure you, Doctor Vidic, that my latest updates to the Animus software will be ready by the end of the we-” He was saying, but was interrupted by this “Vidic”. “No, Doctor Karson, it will be ready by tomorrow evening or I will replace you. That is the end of discussion.” Vidic’s face disappeared from the screen, signaling the end of the Video Conference. Karson leaned forward, resting his head on his hands. “Pompous bastard… replace me… as if.” he grumbled, and got up. He turned around and saw Devin. “What is it, Officer?” He asked, a look of disdain on his face.
Devin smiled behind his mask, and stepped closer to Doctor Karson. “Your time has come, Doctor Karson.” He said, and, activating his hidden blade, he lunged for the Doctor’s throat. The doctor caught his wrist, and delivered a powerful kick to the younger man’s chest. “Haha! Cute. The assassin brotherhood expects an amateur like you to hurt me… they’re getting desperate.” Devin tried to crawl back to his feet, but was kicked down again by Karson. “Bien essaye, petit assassin.” he muttered, pulling a pistol from a shoulder holster. “Aller a dieu.” he said, and squeezed the trigger.
Or, he would have, had a young woman not busted through the window and delivered a roundhouse kick to his midriff, sending him flying through the glass door to the lab and into the hallway. The two guards entered the room, already drawing their pistols from the holsters at their hips. The girl lunged across the room, and before they had a chance to fire, stabbed them with the hidden blades on each of her wrists. She kneeled next to Devin, and offered her hand. “Told ya you shouldn’t have gone without me, Dev.” she muttered, helping him up. “I may be a trainee, but I’m pretty sure it’s not encouraged to try to take down a Templar Captain solo.” She said, a teasing smile on her lips. “Come on. We’ll have to try to get him later- the whole base is on alert.”
Devin, despite his fury at Karson, saw the logic in her decision, and they fled the base, leaving a small trail of dead guards to the exit.
